Korean Corn Cane Ice Cream - Rare chance to try in Singapore
There was a temporary Korean Food Fest last week and by the time you have seen this post, I guess this 'rare' dessert would already be gone from Takashimaya. For someone who have not been to Korea before, I found this yellow wrinkled cane looking thing rather alien. After Kepo-ing (busybody-ing) around a bit, I found out that it was the corn cane ice cream that was imported from Korea, costing $3.50 each.
I even went to video how she 'squeeze' the vanilla soft serve ice cream in these hollow centred corn canes.
Check out the video on my instagram account here!
Gosh! I just had buffet at Marriott Cafe less than a hour ago and I am eating this! Already ultra full and this corn cane did not show my stomach any mercy at all. While girls go crazy over K-pop bands, I got influenced by Meok-Band Trend, which is the latest online craze among South Koreans. It involves watching a gorgeous woman eat giant servings of food!
''Combine the elements of competitive food eating, voyeurism and online porn and you turn the banal act of eating into marathon livestreamed video that has become a growing trend out of South Korea.''
Nah, not into that extend yet since I only had pictures of myself enjoying my food...
Being a bit of an asshole here, I saw a couple of girls seriously enjoying themselves feeding on this yellow sticks. Guys eating this would naturally feel much more awkward. I told my friend to give his girlfriend a cane and he would be able to tell if she were good at SEX. (One of the criteria)
Frankly, the corn cane was only slightly crisp, close to tasteless and containing fairly little soft serve. Don't judge the internal containment by its overall size!
*Update* - There is an outlet at Vivocity basement 2 selling these for the same price too!

Brownice - Healthier ice cream!
Taking the ass back view of these 2 ladies at Brownice was not on purpose. Don't judge me. It was a quiet weekday night and my friend and I decided to drop by for ice cream and waffles! (I recently got hooked on to the waffle craze and kept craving for waffles...) Brownice serves vegan ice cream, made from organic brown rice, free from animal products and dairy-free. It definitely sounds healthier and the more I had the reason to indulge!
We agreed to get waffles with 2 scopes of ice cream to share and ended up with 2 basic and original flavors which were vanilla and strawberry.
Our process of picking the 2 flavors - We started off trying about 2 of the other flavors which did not suit our likings.
Friend: I think I want to pick strawberry, it tasted really good.
Me: After trying blueberry - Wow blueberry tasted so natural! I want blueberry!
Friend: If you pick blueberry, I shall change flavor.
Me: O ya, no point getting 2 berry flavors.
Friend to service staff: Could I try the vanilla flavor?
Me: Huh? How come you want try vanilla, so common leh...nothing special.
Friend: After trying - It tasted so weird....
Me: After trying - Omg, I love the taste! So unique with a rather strong smoky flavor. Do people actually smoke vanilla beans too? I am getting this flavor!
Friend: You taking Vanilla? Alright, I will take Strawberry then.
I guess I have already described the ice cream taste during the conversation above. The scopes of ice cream were HUGE and I am not kidding! (See below picture for justification.) The waffle was drizzled with chocolate sauce which dried up into the waffle itself. Although crispy and somewhat dry, the waffle had a mild burnt taste that was quite distasteful to me. I was taking picture of ourselves taking a selfie shot at the background!
(From my friend's instagram)
The perfect ambient and the natural taste of ice cream would definitely lure us back for other flavors.
Why my favorite green tea flavor was not available that day!!

Gelare Waffles - Nothing impressive, really...
Have been wanting to update my blog but was quite busy with work recently! I am working in a small cafe right now (about a week only), doing some 'mise en place' and preparing for the cafe's opening that is scheduled next week. Just a short post before I head off to my dreamland!
I have been wondering why people get so crazy about waffles, especially crispy ones. I have tried a couple of waffles from other cafes which fared much better than the waffles from Gelare. It felt so 'instant' and slightly crispy. I had mine drenched with maple syrup with 2 humps of ice cream that did not impress me.
Maybe I should also compile a list of good waffles found around Singapore??
Dozing off soon......Hopefully, I should be able to post another of my lagged post by the end of this week.

Swensens - My childhood memories with my family
As I wrote this post, tons of childhood memories with my family flashed across my mind. It was the brand that everyone should be familiar with, 'Swensens' that triggered these nostalgic memories. I loved it back then when I enjoyed almost every food without a thought or a single complain. But not now as comments would naturally start generating and criticisms would be blurted out of my mouth. How I hoped to go back in time again and re-experience the pure innocence of food enjoyment.
I had the topless 5 and I got to pick any 5 flavors of my choice. Despite the inferior quality of the ice cream, I still finished it up, trying hard not to leash out a single complain. Quite a futile attempt I must say, but I still loved the thin mint flavor (since young)!
My mum went for the mundane banana split as usual. The 3 fixed flavors were strawberry, vanilla and chocolate and it was the same price as my topless 5. I actually did not expect the prices at Swensens to be that high since this brand is catered to families.

Creamier - Totally packed
After I did a tasting for the green tea flavor, I did not order because it tasted diluted and not intense enough. O well, my friend got the green tea flavor anyway. It was more towards the refreshing light taste instead of the usual intense matcha which I always loved. Maybe some people would prefer green tea without the bitter aftertaste. Creamier Ice Cream and Waffles - Unlink choice
Omg so busy recently that I have no time to blog! I just came back from a short (3 days) getaway trip to Batam during the National day holidays and am now flooded with 2 major projects from school. Anyway, let me change to a more chill topic of an ice cream dessert which I had with my friend. I brought my friend to this outlet which was just walking distance from his house and he did not even know this place existed! Since my previous visit I did not have a chance to try their home-made waffles, we decided to order it with 2 scopes of ice cream! It was rather crowded that day and we had to wait quite a while before 2 near-perfect round spheres of ice cream, balanced neatly on top 2 squares of in-between-crispy-and-fluffy waffles arrived. Was glad it came in 2 squares as it saved us the trouble of portioning. I picked the Sea Salt Gula Melaka which had a lovely palm sugar sweetness, enhanced by the saltiness of sea salt. My perfect combination of sweet-salty! My friend decided to go for the tropical fruity Mango Passion Sorbet. It was tangy, deliciously refreshing and it had an obvious fruit puree taste. I felt the mango was dominant while my friend actually thought the passion fruit was more overpowering. (Who's right?) The main agreement that we both had in unison was that these 2 scopes totally do not compliment well with each other, like the opposite polarity of North and South. |
